The Pink Poster Club (PPC) is a civic engagement and activist group that uses posters, art, community events and protests to build awareness and oppose threats to democracy and freedom. Based in Evanston, the group was created by cofounders Savanna Essig-Fox and Emily Miller with the goal of making resistance and activism approachable, fun and joyful.
The Backstory
After the inauguration Emily and Savanna met at a local Evanston bar to discuss next steps - the friendship started with hard pants and politics well before Trump entered the scene for the second time.
With Trump newly inaugurated the two met to discuss what they could do together to fight back, build community and inspire others to join. The first meeting ended with a loose plan: they would both create instagram accounts, and together they would make politically motivated posters to flyer around town. The first meeting ended with a poster of Elon Musk’s Tesla truck on fire with the words “Why does the richest man on earth know our social security numbers?” and a QR code to a website with an action to call representatives. And with that, Pink Poster Club was born.
The group has grown significantly over time and now has 9 dedicated members with numerous others volunteering their time as they can to post flyers, organize rallies and protests, and respond to immediate calls to action, including community patrols, donations and boycotts.
Primary goals
Building Community: Pink Poster Club hosts regular events for the community to help foster connections and deepen its impact.
Regular meetings include a monthly happy-hour and bi-monthly book club.
One-time events include family rallies, protests against federal overreach of power, and community art events.
Protecting democratic rights: The club organizes rallies and marches to stand up for democratic rights. Pink Poster Club believes large and small demonstrations of activism through rallies and protests are critical to ensuring the power stays with the people.
Educating and mobilizing: PPC creates posters with QR codes that link to their website, providing educational resources and action items like calling legislators. They distribute posters and encourage members to attend larger protests.
Creating ideas for a new world: Through its various channels, real life activism, social media and community events, PPC’s work, while sometimes tongue-in-cheek, has its eye on the future. The group hopes to highlight what a new world could look like- one that thrives on community and neighbors, with healthcare for all, public education, community gardens, and paid parental leave. A world where climate change is a fact, where abortion is accessible and affordable. A world where children are always fed and cared for.
Guiding principles and political beliefs
Some of the core beliefs that drive Pink Poster Club and its members are below- this list is not exhaustive and will change over time.
Community - we need it to be happy and healthy
Abortion - access for all. Full stop.
Immigration - immigrants make our country better. Status should not define someone’s right to humane treatment. All people deserve safety, due process and to be treated with dignity. Migration is a human right.
Health Care - we must have a national healthcare system
Elections.1 - free and fair, no nonsense ID laws that create hurdles to the ballot
Elections.2 - voting days should be a federal holiday to enable everyone to participate
Supreme Court - term-limits and/or increasing the bench size
Electoral College - should be abolished
Citizens United - should be overturned. Just a piece of garbage
